Milestones

  55th Steet Underpass
A reconstructed 55th Street Underpass, connecting the Hyde Park neighborhood to the lakefront, is open for pedestrians and bicyclists in Burnham Park.
31st Street Bridge
Architectural details, including obelisks and decorative lighting, can be seen on the completed 31st Street Bridge in Burnham Park near McCormick Place.
Reconstruction of South Lake Shore Drive began in September of 2001 and will be completed in 2004. Here's a progress report of key elements--or Milestones--already completed:

  • Major roadwork completed in both directions from 23rd to 67th Streets.
    Completion: December 2003

  • Both directions of Marquette Drive (6600 south) between Richards Drive and Jeffery Drive/Coast Guard Drive reconstructed.
    Completion: December 2003

  • Both directions of Marquette Drive from the Jeffery Drive/Coast Guard Drive intersection to 67th Street reconstructed.
    Completed: November 2003.

  • Both directions of Coast Guard Drive from Hayes Drive to Marquette Drive reconstructed.
    Completed: November 2003.

  • Between 23rd and 67th Streets, more than 11.5 miles of new storm sewers have been installed.
    Completed: October, 2003.

  • Structural work for five new underpasses finished.
    Completed: October, 2003.

  • Animal Bridge reconstructed and façade restored.
    Completed: September, 2003.

  • All Lake Shore Drive lanes from 23rd Street to 56th Street have been reconstructed.
    Completed: July, 2003.

  • 31st Street Bridge near McCormick Place has been reconstructed and the bridge is fully open to traffic.
    Completed: July, 2003.

  • Jeffery Drive reconstructed.
    Completed: May, 2003.

  • A reconstructed 55th Street Underpass is open in Burnham Park.
    Completed: September, 2002.

  • At the 63rd Street Beach House, reconfigured parking lot was constructed.
    Completed: December, 2001.

  • At southwest corner of Hayes Drive and South Lake Shore Drive, a new boat launch parking lot was constructed.
    Completed: December, 2001.

  • Resurfaced approximately 8 miles of alternate routes including Pershing Rd., Cottage Grove Ave., 47th St., Midway Plaisance, Stony Island Ave., Cornell Dr., and 67th St.
    Completed: December, 2001.

  • In Jackson Park, Hayes Dr. was realigned to intersect with 63rd St. at South Lake Shore Dr.; Hayes Dr. was reconstructed from Lake Shore Drive to Stony Island Ave.; and, along Hayes Dr., a new storm sewer was installed.
    Completed: December, 2001.

More improvements to come

Other areas of work through early 2004 include:

  • Westbound lanes of Marquette Drive (6600 south) from 67th Street to Jeffery Drive; northbound lanes of Lake Shore Drive from Hayes Drive (6300 south) to 57th Drive.

  • Construction of Jackson Park median and barrier walls continues between 57th Drive and 67th Street.

  • New and existing green spaces in Burnham and Jackson Parks will be enhanced with trees, bushes, perennials, and ornamental grasses. That includes median landscaping between 23rd and 51st Streets, gateway landscaping at 31st Street and at Oakwood Blvd., and landscaping for the new underpasses in Jackson Park.

  • Completion of pedestrian/bike underpasses at 57th Drive, 59th Street, 63rd Street, and Marquette Drive, including updated paths architectural finishes and landscaping. The underpasses will be fully accessible to people with disabilities.

  • Addition of a boardwalk along 57th Street Beach.
