CHICAGO, Dec. 14, 2001 — Tomorrow (Dec 15), traffic along 57th Drive will be limited to at least one lane in each direction from South Lake Shore Drive to Cornell Drive. Lane closures will occur during daytime hours, from 7 a.m. until 4 p.m. only, the Chicago Department of Transportation said.

Drivers in the area of 57th Drive should expect delays, especially at those times. Motorists going beyond Jackson Park may consider avoiding 57th Drive altogether by taking an alternate route:

For destinations south of 57th Drive – Continue southbound on Lake Shore Drive to Marquette Drive or 67th Street.

For destinations north of 57th Drive – Take 67th Street to Jeffery Blvd. then north to Lake Shore Drive; or Marquette Drive to Coast Guard Drive then north to Lake Shore Drive.

The 57th Drive lane reductions are required so that work crews can safely continue underground and utility work associated with the ongoing South Lake Shore Drive Reconstruction Project.

The City of Chicago, Illinois Department of Transportation, and the Federal Highway Administration are investing $162 million in the South Lake Shore Drive Reconstruction Project, with much of the funding coming from the Illinois FIRST program. For more project information, please call 311 in Chicago or visit the project website at www.cityofchicago.org/Transportation. For CTA or Metra information, call the RTA at 836-7000 from any Chicagoland area code.
