Reversible lane returns to South Lake Shore Drive reconstruction zone

Beginning this Saturday (Feb. 1) on South Lake Shore Drive, there will be two lanes in each direction between 23rd Street and 57th Drive, with a third reversible lane between 23rd and 47th Streets of South Lake Shore Drive.

Weather permitting, construction crews all day Saturday will prepare the roadway for this new configuration. During this process, drivers should expect lane shifts and intermittent traffic delays when traveling in the area. Once the new configuration is set, here's what drivers will find
  • During the morning rush hour on weekdays and all day on weekends, northbound drivers will have three lanes from 47th Street to 23rd Street. At 47th Street, drivers will need to make one of two decisions.
    • Remain in the local lanes for access to all exits north of 47th Street including the Stevenson Expressway (I-55); or,
    • Enter the reversible lane, which will serve as an "express lane" for morning rush hour traffic with 18th Street as the first exit.
  • During the evening rush hour on weekdays, the reversible lane will be configured so southbound drivers have three lanes from 23rd Street to 47th Street, with access to all southbound exits.
  • The lane reductions are necessary as crews begin to reconstruction the northbound side of South Lake Shore Drive between 23rd Street and 57th Drive in Burnham Park.
  • Work continues in Jackson Park. Southbound traffic will continue to detour via 57th Drive, Cornell Drive, and Marquette Drive. Northbound traffic will continue to detour via Marquette Drive, Richards Drive and Hayes Drive.
