Major reopening coming this weekend along South Lake Shore Drive

As the South Lake Shore Drive reconstruction project progresses, drivers in Jackson Park should expect new openings and traffic configuration changes. Beginning this Saturday morning (Nov. 15), here's what drivers will find:
  • Beginning at 7 a.m., the process of reopening southbound Lake Shore Drive from 57th Drive to Hayes Drive (6300 south) will take place.
  • At the same time, work crews will begin the process of returning the intersection of 57th Drive and South Lake Shore Drive to its normal signalized configuration. For eastbound 57th Drive motorists, it means that left and right turning lanes will return.
  • The changeovers are expected to take place throughout the day as work crews remove barrier walls, stripe the pavement, and activate the traffic signals.
  • Drivers are urged to be extra cautious in the area due to the close proximity of work crews and construction equipment. The speed limit in the area remains 35 mph, but drivers should be prepared to stop.
  • By Sunday (Nov. 16), the reopening is expected to be completed.
  • In other areas - especially in Burnham Park between 23rd Street and 57th Drive - drivers should always expect intermittent non-rush hour lane closures in both directions.
