New lanes to reopen this weekend in Burnham Park section of South Lake Shore Drive

South Lake Shore Drive work crews this weekend will begin the process of opening to traffic the newly reconstructed southbound lanes in Burnham Park. HereÕs what drivers will find:

  • Beginning Saturday (Nov. 16) through Monday morning (Nov. 18), drivers should expect intermittent lane closures and delays along the southbound Lake Shore Drive from 23rd Street to 57th Drive.

  • During that time, work crews will prepare the pavement for new lane configurations, which include opening new lanes for southbound traffic between 31st and 47th Streets.

  • The reversible lane in place since the summer will continue to add a third lane northbound from 47th to 23rd Streets during the morning rush. In the afternoon, that same lane will become an express lane southbound between 23rd and 47th Streets for exits south of 47th Street.

  • As southbound drivers approach 23rd Street in the afternoon, they will need to make one of the following decisions:
    • Stay to the right for local exits of 31st Street, Oakwood Blvd., 47th Street, Hyde Park Blvd. and 53rd Street.
    • Stay to the left and enter the express lane if your destination is 53rd Street or beyond.

  • Weather permitting, the new configuration will be completed by the afternoon rush hour on Monday (Nov. 18).
