City of Chicago Announces Free Business Education Workshops Schedule for January 2014

The Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection (BACP) will host nine free business education workshops on Wednesdays and Fridays throughout December in Room 805 at City Hall, 121 N. LaSalle St., Chicago.

The City will offer the topics "City Inspections - Ask Questions, Get Answers," Small Business Improvement Fund (SBIF) Grants in Chicago,” “How to Open a Concession at O’Hare or Midway Airports,” “How to Obtain a Sidewalk Cafe Permit” and “How to Become Certified/Doing Business with the City of Chicago.”

Additionally, BACP has invited guest speakers Illinois SBDC/Duman Entrepreneurship Center at JVS to present “How to Write a Business Plan — Your Roadmap to Success,” the Maribel Del Real, Del Real Tax Group to present “QuickBooks Best Practices: Managing your Business,” Melinda Kelly and Samia Malik, Chatham Business Association to present “Get Connected: Online Marketing Tools for Your Business,” and  Jane Zhao, Center for Economic Progress, to present “Big Dreams for the Small Business Owner: Don’t Let Taxes Get in Your Way.”

1/8     City Inspections - Ask Questions, Get Answers

Talk to officials from four  City departments who will provide insight to operate safely, stay compliant, help prepare for inspections  and point out the do’s and don’ts of operating your business. 1/10     QuickBooks Best Practices: Managing your Business

Not the quickest with Quickbooks? Pick up the pace by attending this workshop and learning how this  accounting software can help build your business. 1/15     Small Business Improvement Fund (SBIF) Grants in Chicago

1/24     How to Obtain a Sidewalk Cafe Permit

Presented by BACP Public Way Use Unit

Take the mystery out of the Sidewalk Cafe Permit Application process by attending this informative  workshop. We will explain the application process, inform you of all the requirements, and help you get  prepared to submit an application. The entire application process may take 30 - 45 days, and the 2014  Sidewalk Cafe Season begins on March 1, so make sure to reserve your seat now.

1/29     How to Become Certified

Presented by the City of Chicago Department of Procurement Services (DPS)

This workshop will provide information on which businesses are qualified to become certified as a Minority/Woman Owned Business Enterprise. Learn what documents are required, where to go for help, and how to avoid the most common mistakes.
