Airport Concessions, Mobile Food Dispenser/Preparer License Highlight March Workshops

March 2013 Business Workshop Calendar


The City of Chicago is hosting several workshops during March at the Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection’s Business Education Workshops. The workshops are held every Wednesday and Friday in room 805 at City Hall, 121 N. LaSalle St., Chicago.


City departments will present “How to Open a Concession at O’Hare or Midway Airports,” “Talk to City Inspectors, Ask Questions, Get Answers,” “How to Obtain a Mobile Food Dispenser/Preparer License,” “JOC Information Session,” “How to Obtain a Liquor and Public Place of Amusement License,” and “How to Become Certified/ Doing Business with the City of Chicago.”


Apart from City of Chicago departments, Jane Zhao, Center for Economic Progress and Yolanda Ruiz, IRS will present “Big Dreams for the Small Business Owner: Don't Let Taxes Get in Your Way,” Charles Krugel, a management side labor, employment & human resources attorney will present “Understanding Labor & Employment Law for Businesses,” and Presented by Jesse Caballero, Habanero Communications “Online Marketing 101.”

Presented by the Chicago Department of Aviation

Have you ever wondered how you can operate a business or a concession at the Chicago airports? Come and learn about concession opportunities and the process to open a business.


3/6 *Talk to City Inspectors, Ask Questions, Get Answers

3:00 to 4:30 p.m.

Presented by the City of Chicago

To operate a successful business in Chicago you must know the requirements. At this workshop you can talk to inspectors from four City departments who will point out the do’s and don’ts of operating your business, and provide insight on how to operate safely, stay compliant, and prepare for inspections.

3/8 How to Obtain a Mobile Food Dispenser/Preparer License

9:30 to 11:00 a.m.

Presented by the City of Chicago Department of Business Affairs & Consumer Protection (BACP)
Are you interested in operating a food truck in the City of Chicago? Then come and learn about how you may obtain a Mobile Food Dispenser (MFD) or Mobile Food Preparer (MFP) business license. We will be discussing the MFD/MFP licensing process including inspections, the application, mobile food vehicle, and operational requirements, as well as the optional pre-application Mobile Food Vehicle Assessment.


3/13 JOC Information Session

3:00 to 4:30 p.m.

Presented By Dwayne Pierre-Antoine of The Gordian Group

This workshop provides a summary of the City's Job Order Contract Program and the benefits of JOC for the Prime Contractor and Subcontractors. Learn how to bid a JOC as a Prime Contractor and Subcontractor. This session is ideal for construction and construction related business owners.


3/15 Big Dreams for the Small Business Owner: Don't Let Taxes Get in Your Way

9:30 to 11:00 a.m.

Presented by Jane Zhao, Center for Economic Progress and Yolanda Ruiz, IRS

Starting a small business? Learn about when you must file a tax a return and make estimated tax payments, what constitutes taxable income, what business expenses you can deduct, and how good record-keeping can help you save money and survive an IRS audit. Get both perspectives - one from the IRS, and one from an attorney who represents taxpayers.


3/20 Understanding Labor & Employment Law for Businesses

3:00 to 4:30 p.m.

Presented by Charles Krugel, a management side labor, employment & human resources attorney

A highly interactive, Q & A, based discussion about the fundamentals of labor and employment law and human resources management for businesses. Feel free to ask any questions or raise any concerns.

3/22 How to Obtain a Liquor and Public Place of Amusement (PPA) License

Presented by the City of Chicago Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection (BACP)

Are you interested in providing entertainment or serving liquor in your restaurant, bar or theater? Come and learn about the City’s licensing requirements and policies when it comes to liquor licensing, live entertainment, having a DJ, or charging admission at the door.


3/27 *How to Become Certified 1:30 to 3:00 p.m.

Presented by the City of Chicago Department of Procurement Services (DPS)

This workshop will provide information on which businesses are qualified to become certified as a Minority/Woman Owned Business Enterprise. Learn what documents are required, where to go for help, and how to avoid the most common mistakes.

Doing Business with the City of Chicago

3:15 to 4:30 p.m.

This information is designed to outline the role and responsibility of the Department of Procurement Services, and how the City's purchasing process works. This workshop is ideal for companies looking to do business with the City of Chicago.


3/29 Online Marketing 101

9:30 to 11:00 a.m.

Presented by Jesse Caballero, Habanero Communications

Learn the concepts of online marketing, email marketing, and social media that can help your business grow during a challenging economy.
