City of Chicago Hosting New Workshops about Happy Hour Law and Pedicab Licensing

                    Guest Presenters to Present Workshops on Basic Business Building Blocks and Quickbooks

The City of Chicago Department of Business Affairs & Consumer Protection (BACP) is hosting the special workshop hosting “Happy Hour Law in Chicago,” which is geared toward helping liquor a licensee avoid citations by understanding state and City laws on Happy Hour. BACP also will present the workshop “What Licenses Do You Need to Run a Pedicab Business or to Drive a Pedicab?”

“This workshop will help attendees understand a new City of Chicago ordinance that licenses and regulates the Pedicab Industry,” said Deputy Commissioner Rupal Bapat, of BACP. “The workshop will cover the new Pedicab license and Pedicab chauffeur license.”

City of Chicago officials also are scheduled to present the workshops “City Inspections – Ask Questions, Get Answers,” “How to Obtain a Mobile Food Dispenser/Preparer License,” and “How to Become Certified/Doing Business with the City of Chicago.”

Additionally, Larvetta L. Loftin, of CEO of L3 Eventeurs  will present “How to Effectively Create a Brand That People Know, Love and Trust,” Mike Francone, Managing Partner at AmCheck, and Lema Khorshid, of Fuksa Khorshid, LLC, will present  “Recording and Reporting Financial Statements & Payroll Accounting,”Donna R. Rockin, Executive Director Knapp Entrepreneurship Center at the Illinois Institute of Technology, will present “Basic Business Building Blocks” and Maribel Del Real, of Del Real Tax Group, will present “Quickbooks Best Practices: Managing Your Business.”

The Small Business Center at the Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection hosts free business workshops every Wednesday and Friday in Room 805 at City Hall, 121 N. LaSalle St., Chicago. Workshops are conducted by city officials, BACP’s partner organizations, and experts in the industry. Presented by the City of Chicago Department of Business Affairs & Consumer Protection (BACP)
Know the state and City law on Happy Hour violations and the exceptions. A liquor licensee must avoid being cited for advertising or having an event that promotes the over consumption of alcohol.

8/6     City Inspections – Ask Questions, Get Answers
3:00 to 4:30 p.m.
Presented by the City of Chicago
To operate a successful business in Chicago you must know the requirements. Talk to officials from four City departments who will provide insight to operate safely, stay compliant, help prepare for inspections and point out the do’s and don’ts of operating your business. Don’t miss this workshop!

8/8     What Licenses Do you Need to Run a Pedicab Business or to Drive a Pedicab?
9:30 to 11:00 a.m.

A new City of Chicago ordinance licenses and regulates the Pedicab Industry. The Pedicabs Ordinance created two new licenses: pedicab license and pedicab chauffeur license. Each pedicab vehicle must be licensed and the license is obtained by the owner of the pedicab vehicle and authorizes the pedicab vehicle to operate in the City of Chicago. A pedicab chauffeur is the person that drives or peddles the pedicab. A pedicab chauffeur license must be obtained before operating a pedicab in the City of Chicago. This workshop will provide information on the process of obtaining both licenses.

8/13     How to Obtain a Mobile Food Dispenser/Preparer License
3:00 to 4:30 p.m.
Presented by the City of Chicago Department of Business Affairs & Consumer Protection (BACP)
Are you interested in operating a food truck in the City of Chicago? Then come and learn how you may obtain a Mobile Food Dispenser (MFD) or Mobile Food Preparer (MFP) business license. We will be discussing the MFD/MFP licensing process including inspections, the application, mobile food vehicle, and operational requirements, as well as the optional pre-application Mobile Food Vehicle Assessment.

8/15     How to Effectively Create a Brand That People Know, Love and Trust
9:30 to 11:00 a.m.

This workshop will provide practical information on brand strategies to attract more business. It will show tactics to stay relevant and top of people’s mind. You will also learn advantages of connecting personal brand with business brand.

8/20     Recording and Reporting Financial Statements & Payroll Accounting
3:00 to 4:30 p.m.
Presented by Mike Francone, Managing Partner, AmCheck and Lema Khorshid, Fuksa Khorshid, LLC
During this presentation, you will learn important accounting principles and establish guidelines for your cash flow, accounts receivables, and accounts payable. We will review important tax requirements, including how to properly report tips to the IRS, and we’ll discuss penalties for late payments. This session will also cover payroll, including filing W2 forms, determining payroll taxes, enforcing employees’ wage garnishes, and understanding job codes. Finally, we will discuss what qualities to look for when selecting the right restaurant accountant and payroll services provider.

This workshop focuses on how to avoid the biggest, but very common mistakes entrepreneurs make when starting their new businesses. 8/27     How to Become Certified
2:00 to 3:00 p.m.
Presented by the City of Chicago Department of Procurement Services (DPS)
This workshop will provide an overview of the five certification programs currently offered by the City of Chicago: Minority Owned Business Enterprise (MBE), Women Owned Business Enterprise (WBE), Business Enterprises Owned and/or Operated by Persons with Disabilities (BEPD), Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) and Airport Concessions Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (ACDBE). Receive information regarding the application process and how to avoid the most common mistakes applicants encounter when submitting their applications.

8/27    Doing Business with the City of Chicago (Department of Procurement Services)
3:15 to 4:30 p.m.
This information is designed to outline the role and responsibility of the Department of Procurement Services, and how the City’s purchasing process works. This workshop is ideal for companies looking to do business with the City of Chicago.

8/29      Quickbooks Best Practices: Managing Your Business
9:30 to 11:00 a.m.
Presented by the Maribel Del Real, Del Real Tax Group
