Top Ten Frequently Asked Questions About Renewing A Public Chauffeur License

1.  What is the best day to renew my chauffeur license?

In order to avoid crowds and long lines do not wait until the end of the month to renew your City of Chicago chauffeur license.  Try to renew in the beginning of the month (during the first two weeks) your chauffeur license expires in.

2.  What is the best time of day to renew my chauffeur license?

The Public Vehicle Operations Facility at 2350 W. Ogden opens to the public at 8am on weekdays.  The cashier counter is open from 8am to 4pm.  The Public Vehicle Facility tends to be more crowded after 11am, so arriving in the morning between 8am and 11am is your best bet. 

3.  What should I bring with me to renew my chauffeur license?

Public Chauffeurs should have the following:

  • Current Illinois Driver's License card.
  • Current Public Chauffeur License card.
  • Illinois Secretary of State Motor Vehicle Record - Court Purposes (dated less than 30 days from renewal application).
  • Completed and signed Public Chauffeur License Renewal Application.
  • Completed and signed Physical Examination Certification form.
  • Current Department of Revenue Parking Clearance or Payment Plan agreement. 
  • The Department of Revenue can inform you in advance if you have outstanding parking ticket or other City debt.  The Department of Revenue does offer payment plan options to satisfy outstanding City debt. 
  • One Call a Day Affiliation Letter (dated less than 30 days from renewal application).  See Rule 3.11 Affiliation Letter Requirement Compliance form.
  • Proof of completion of Continuing Education Requirement, this course is required once every 24 months.

4.  What should I bring with me to renew my City of Chicago restricted public chauffeur license?

Public Chauffeurs renewing a restricted license should have the following:

  • Current Illinois Driver's License card.
  • Current Public Chauffer License card.
  • Illinois Secretary of State Motor Vehicle Record - Court Purposes (dated less than 30 days from renewal application).
  • Completed and signed Public Chauffeur License Renewal Application
  • Completed and signed Physical Examination Certification form
  • Current Department of Revenue Parking Clearance or Payment Plan agreement.  The Department of Revenue can inform you in advance if you have outstanding parking ticket or other City debt.  The Department of Revenue does offer payment plan options to satisfy outstanding City debt. 

5.  What should I expect if I have any traffic ticket convictions or court ordered supervisions on my driving record with the Secretary of State?

  • 1 moving violation (conviction or supervision) during the 12 month period preceding renewal - you are required to take a 4 hour safe driving class. 
  • 2 moving violations (conviction or supervision) during the 12 month period preceding renewal - you are required to take an 8 hour safe driving class +2 hour behind the wheel class.
  • 3 or more violations (conviction or supervision) during the 12 month period preceding renewal - your license renewal will be denied or revoked. 

6.  I received a "Drug Test Authorization” form as criteria for my City of Chicago chauffeur license renewal, how much time do I have to submit to the drug test?

Drivers have twenty-four hours to submit to a drug test as part of their renewal.  

7.  I am enrolling in school full time and will not have time to operate as a City of Chicago public chauffeur, should I go to 2350 W. Ogden and surrender my chauffeur license card?

Yes.  In fact, for any leave of absence , as a City of Chicago public chauffeur you are required to surrender your chauffeur license card to BACP and personally complete and sign a "Chauffeur License Card Surrender" form detailing the reason for your license surrender. Examples of reasons a driver may surrender a license are, but not limited to, illness, other work, travel, or school.

8.  Does surrendering my chauffeur license card change the expiration date of my chauffeur license?

No.  A chauffeur license expires on the date listed on the card.  When you surrender a license, the expiration date does not change.  You should continue to renew your license upon its expiration to keep it active while you are in surrender status.

9.  I received a citation and I had to surrender my chauffeur license card to the police.  My chauffeur license expires in September 2011.  The court date for the citation I received is not until October 2011.  Can I still renew my chauffeur license in September 2011 even though the police have the license card?

Yes.  In fact, regardless if the chauffeur license card is surrendered voluntarily or involuntarily, a City of Chicago chauffeur is required to renew his or her license before it expires. 

10.  I had surrendered my chauffeur license card to BACP and I just moved.   Am I still required to report my change of address to BACP?

Yes, whenever you move to a new mailing address, even if you simply move into a new apartment number in the same building, rule 7.01 requires you must report the move to BACP within seventy-two hours of the move.
