Chicago Green Homes Program: Program Details

The Chicago Green Homes Program (CGHP)  equips residents with the resources, structure, and confidence to achieve sustainability, and contributes in establishing Chicago as the most environmentally-friendly city in the nation.

CGHP: Home Types

Certification through the CGHP is available to whole buildings only. Partial buildings or additions alone do not qualify, however major renovations of existing buildings that include additions are permitted.

Chicagoans looking to enroll in the CGHP must fit within the following categories:

  • Single-Family Home New Construction (including town homes)
  • Single-Family Home Major Renovation (including town homes)
  • Multi-Family Building New Construction (less than 80 feet in height)
  • Multi-Family Building Major Renovation (less than 80 feet in height)

Please note: If the addition area is less than or equal to 25% of the project’s gross square footage, the renovation checklist must be used. If the addition area is greater than 25% of the project’s gross square footage, the project must use the new construction checklist.

CGHP: Green Building Starts Early and Includes All
The CGHP believes in the importance of integrating green design at the beginning of the planning process, and views all aspects of home building as holistically intertwined. The CGHP GUIDE (v2.0) and accompanying checklists reflect these beliefs, and are organized by the following categories:

100 Sustainable Sites

200 Energy Efficiency

300 Materials

400 Health and Safety

500 Resource Conservation

600 Homeowner Education

700 Innovation

The systems and products used in residential homes have a substantial impact over each other, as well as their surrounding environment. Effective sustainable design is much more difficult to achieve as an “after thought” and therefore imperative to include at the conception of your building plans.

CGHP: Points and Ratings
The CGHP was modeled after U.S. Green Building Council guidelines, and grants certification according to a point-based, three-star rating scale. Points are accrued through line items found on the project checklists.

The CGHP is largely voluntary, however participation for projects reviewed by various City agencies including the Department of Community Development, the Department of Zoning and Land Use Planning, and the Chicago Housing Authority may be required.
