#DIVVYRED Bike to Return to Chicago Streets as a Birthday Gift

Mayor Rahm Emanuel today celebrated the one-year anniversary of Divvy, Chicago's bike share system, with a "birthday gift" by bringing back #DIVVYRED, a single red bike painted the color of the stars on the city flag.

"Even though Divvy is only one year old, it has already become a key transportation option for many Chicagoans and has changed the way we and our visitors move around this city in an active and fun way," said Mayor Rahm Emanuel. "I encourage everyone to celebrate this milestone by getting on a Divvy bike and going for a ride."

The single #DIVVYRED bike will be in the system through the month of July. Riders of the red bike can use the hashtag #DIVVYRED to post online via social media photos and videos featuring the bike, making them eligible to win great prizes from Divvy's partners in the promotion, including:

  • VIP ticket packages from the Chicago Blackhawks, Chicago Bulls, and Pitchfork
  • Special experiences from Hotel Felix, Hotel Cass, Goose Island Brewery, The Second City, and Chicago Architecture Foundation
  • Food and drink from Intelligentsia, Chipotle Mexican Grill, Roti Mediterranean Grill, Noodles & Co, Forever Yogurt, and Lettuce Entertain You
  • Gear and clothing from Bern, Timbuk2, PoCampo, Cleverhood, and Gap Inc.
  • More great prizes from Red Bull, Grubhub, Clif Bar, and Zipcar

In only one year of operation, Chicagoans and visitors have taken more than 1.6 million individual trips on the 3,000 blue bikes to and from 300 neighborhood stations. They have collectively traveling an estimated 3.5 million miles and burning more than 150 million calories.

There are now more than 23,000 annual members, while nearly 250,000 daily passes have been sold to date. More than 200 companies and organizations have signed up for Divvy Corporate and Community Partnerships, providing their employees and members with discounted annual Divvy memberships.

Last month, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois became Divvy's presenting sponsor in an effort to support, strengthen and expand the popular bike share program, as well as cycling in neighborhoods across Chicago.
