The Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) will close the Grand Avenue Bridge over the North Branch of the Chicago River for the next two weeks, starting tonight, in order to make needed repairs to the historic structure.

CDOT has been performing regular maintenance on the bridge this summer, and is accelerating plans after a weekend inspection determined a need for a repair of part of the steel structure.  The historic double-leaf bascule bridge was originally built in 1913, and was rehabilitated in 1974. 

“We are vigilant in the maintenance and repair of Chicago’s historic bridges,” said CDOT Commissioner Gabe Klein. “By  making these needed repairs, we are ensuring that the Grand Avenue Bridge will continue to provide access to the Near North Side for many more years to come.”

The bridge will be closed after 7 p.m. September 23rd, and will remain closed for repairs until early Monday, October 7th. 

Automobile, bicycle and pedestrian traffic will detoured around the bridge via Halsted Street, Chicago Avenue and LaSalle Street. 

The Chicago Transit Authority #65 bus route will be detoured around the bridge via Halsted, Chicago and Kingsbury Street.
