Monroe Street/Art Institute crosswalk installation
Starting the week of August 9, CDOT begins a project to install a pedestrian crosswalk on Monroe from the entrance of the Modern Wing of the Art Institute of Chicago to Millennium Park.
The project will improve the pedestrian crossing by creating a median refuge island, adding flashing beacons and installing ADA compliant sidewalk ramps.
The project is fully funded by the Art Institute of Chicago.
During construction, traffic and pedestrian impacts include:
- The outside, westbound traffic lane on Monroe will be closed to vehicular traffic directly in front of the Millennium Park Garage entrance on Monroe so that pedestrians can utilize it during the northbound sidewalk closure as part of the Phase 1 work.
- The interior east and westbound lanes will be closed for approximately 10 days during Phase 2 of this project, when the pedestrian median refuge is constructed. The outside lanes in both directions will remain open for vehicular traffic during this phase.
The project is scheduled for completion in mid-September.
