Damen-Elston-Fullerton intersection improvement

rendering of improved intersection

CDOT is planning to improve the six-way intersection of Damen Avenue, Elston Avenue and Fullerton Avenue.  Current plans call for a realignment of Elston to bypass the current intersection and cross Fullerton about one block east of the current intersection.  Click here for a more detailed rendering.

UPDATE February 2012:  Based on feedback received at, and subsequent to, the April 2011 public hearing, CDOT will propose changes to the approved geometrics as shown here: Damen Elston Fullerton Intersection Improvement

  1. CDOT will propose separating the bike lanes on rerouted Elston from traffic with a 2' wide curb barrier and to widen proposed bike lanes  6.5’ (measured from face‐to‐face of curb). Previously 5' wide striped bike lanes were proposed on rerouted Elston.
  2. Also, along Damen Avenue north of Fullerton Avenue, CDOT will recommend to widen the right-of-way in order to accommodate both 5 lanes of traffic and  5' striped bike lanes, one on each side of the street, tying into the bike lanes north of the project limit.. Previously the bike lanes were proposed to end several hundred feet north of Fullerton.
  3. Right of way south of Fullerton along Damen will be widened to provide an 11‐ft southbound outside lane (previously 10’) and a 14’ northbound outside lane (previously 10’) in order to better accommodate both vehicles and bicycles.

Proposed changes need to be vetted by CDOT, IDOT (Illinois Department of Transportation), and FHWA (Federal Highway Administration) staff,  and will be confirmed upon approval on this website.
