Apply for an Air Pollution Control Permit

A permit is required to install, operate, erect, construct, reconstruct, alter or add a piece of process equipment, process area, or air pollution control equipment. If you’re uncertain as to whether a permit is needed for the activity you wish to perform, read Procedure for Air Pollution Control Permit.

If your project involves building construction or renovation, you can apply for a permit online through the Department of Buildings (DOB) website. Please note that Air Pollution Control Permits are called Environmental Equipment Permits on DOB’s website.

To apply for a permit by mail:

Fill out the related permit application listed below. An application and fee is required for each activity.
Attach a check or money order made payable to the City of Chicago. The fee is $150 per piece of equipment or area.
Attach a notarized affidavit.
Attach a copy of your business license.
Complete and attach Performance Standard for Process Equipment and Control Devices if your permit is for a new facility or business, or involves a major expansion of an existing business or facility.

Incomplete or illegible permit applications are subject to return or denial. If you have questions or need assistance completing the form(s), please call us at 312.745.7206.

7. A permit will be issued and mailed to you after your application has been
approved.
