Apply for an Air Pollution Control Permit

A permit is required to install, operate, erect, construct, reconstruct, alter or add a piece of process equipment, process area, or air pollution control equipment. If you’re uncertain as to whether a permit is needed for the activity you wish to perform,  read Procedure for Air Pollution Control Permit.

If your project involves building construction or renovation, you can apply for a permit online through the Department of Buildings (DOB) website. Please note that Air Pollution Control Permits are called Environmental Equipment Permits on DOB’s website.

To apply for a permit by mail:

  1. Fill out the related permit application listed below. An application and fee is required for each activity.
  2. Attach a check or money order made payable to the City of Chicago. The fee is $150 per piece of equipment or area.
  3. Attach a notarized affidavit.
  4. Attach a copy of your business license.
  5. Complete and attach Performance Standard for Process Equipment and Control Devices if your permit is for a new facility or business, or involves a major expansion of an existing business or facility.
  6. Mail the application, forms and payment to:

Incomplete or illegible permit applications are subject to return or denial. If you have questions or need assistance completing the form(s), please call us at 312.745.7206.

 7.   A permit will be issued and mailed to you after your application has been
      approved.
