The Big Draw Chicago “House of Cards”

11am-3pm

Join us for Big Draw Day! Create individual works on cardboard, and then build a large-scale “house of cards” with friends and strangers.

Shawn Smith will be on hand making brilliant Resketch books, and Christen Carter of Busy Beaver Button Co. will guide you through the process of drawing and pressing your own original buttons.

“House of Cards” is part of The Big Draw Chicago, a month-long festival that brings people together through informal art-making. The festival takes place at dozens of cultural sites throughout October.

The Big Draw Chicago “Graphic Scores”

1-3pm

Create a graphic score, or a piece of music without traditional musical notes. Draw rhythm (fast, slow, medium), pitch (high, low, medium), and volume (loud, soft, medium). Then, listen as members of Fifth House Ensemble interpret and play your score using a clarinet, bassoon, cello, and viola.

The Big Draw Chicago “Draw Like Darger”

10am-1pm

Draw like Henry Darger with Intuit: The Center for Intuitive and Outsider Art. Using reproductions of the mid-Century coloring books from Darger’s collection, we’ll create a large-scale, collaborative landscape.

When you’re done with the main activity, make a drawing to add to the Big Draw Chicago Coloring Book. This coloring book will feature original art made by program participants (you!); our plan is to publish the book next year.

Joining the fun will be Regin Igloria of North Branch Projects, who will bring handmade sketchbooks for you to contribute to, and Diane Durand of Discovery Doodles, who will help you draw and share your "hopes and dreams."

The Big Draw Chicago “Street Art”

11am-3pm

Celebrate street art with Yollocalli Arts Reach and the National Museum of Mexican Art. Express yourself in a variety of ways onto a fictional urban landscape. You can also practice graffiti art and make your own stencils.

After you're done drawing, visit the street art exhibition upstairs at the Chicago Cultural Center.
