Friends of the Parks

 

The 2013 Walter Netsch Lectures are organized and curated by Friends of the Parks. Friends of the Parks is the only citywide, independent park advocacy organization working on behalf of all Chicago neighborhood parks, playgrounds, the lakefront and forest preserves. For nearly four decades, Friends of the Parks has been the strongest voice for the protection preservation, expansion and improvement of the city’s 8,200 acres of parks and Cook County’s 68,000 acres of forest preserves.

The Brilliance of the Forest Preserve District of Cook County: Celebrating 100 Years

Visionaries including Jens Jensen and Dwight Perkins set up the Forest Preserve District of Cook County in 1913, knowing that the expansion of the city of Chicago would envelope open spaces, prairies and woodlands. The fight for the Forest Preserve District succeeded in giving us a legacy of 68,000 acres of forests for public use and enjoyment.
