In The Works Program Application

In the Works is the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events' residency program and gives emerging and established performing artists the opportunity to test-drive new work in a public setting. Each residency is tailored to the needs of the artist or company and their project and takes place in the most suitable DCASE space. Each showing is a unique opportunity for audiences to get a behind-the-scenes look at new work by Chicago artists.

Application Criteria

  • You can apply as an individual or as a company.
  • You do not need to be a not for profit organization to apply for this program, although not for profit organizations are welcome to apply.
  • You must reside within the City of Chicago to be eligible for this program.
  • You cannot owe any outstanding debts to the City of Chicago. Any outstanding debt must be paid before space requests will be fulfilled.
  • Preference will be given to the creation of new work. You may apply for this program in order to rehearse a play that is already written or rehearse repertory work you have already premiered, but the top priority will be given to artists who need space in order to develop new works.
  • These residencies are adaptive. There is no formula as to what a residency must look like. Please think carefully about how you propose to use the space. We want this opportunity to be as useful to the development of new work as possible.
  • There is no limit on amount of time you can request, and no particular way in which time must be scheduled. Ask for the space you require. The space is available for use for this first cycle of In The Works from February 14, 2014-August 14, 2014. (Examples of possible requests: 2 weeks of exclusive access to the space; 2 hours of rehearsal/week for 6 months; every weekend for a month.)

If you meet the above criteria, please click here to apply for this program.

Applications must be submitted by November 15, 2013. Late or incomplete applications will not be evaluated.
