A field house will be built in Jesse Owens Park through a Department of Zoning and Land Use Planning financing plan approved today by City Council.

The plan will utilize $1.65 million in Tax Increment Financing (TIF) from the Stony Island/Burnside TIF District to help pay for the $8.6 million structure.

To be constructed by the Public Building Commission at 2032 E. 88th St., the 18,500-square-foot, one-story field house will include a gymnasium, fitness and club rooms, shower facilities and administrative offices. It would also include new landscaping and a play lot.

In addition to TIF, financing will include a state grant and Park District capital funds.

Located in the Calumet Heights Community, the 18-acre park has been without a field house since its development in the 1950s.
