Calumet Design Guidelines

The Calumet Design Guidelines depart from the city's traditional landscape ordinance by establishing unique landscape standards that  help economic development projects blend with the rare wetland features on Chicago’s Far South Side.

Not served with a comprehensive sewer system, Calumet area property owners are forced to provide for the on-site management of stormwater. Rather than require standard mowed turf grass, the guidelines recommend a native landscape palette more compatible and functional with the surrounding landscape character, which includes the Calumet Open Space Reserve marshes, wetlands, and prairies. The guidelines were approved by the Chicago Plan Commission in March 2004.
