The Software Development organization is responsible for creating and supporting websites and web applications that help City Departments serve their customers and fulfill their missions. It is responsible for the Enterprise Geographical Information Systems (GIS) used by City departments to map information and manage geospatial data. The team develops and supports reusable shared services that integrate disparate systems and provide utility services for software applications. Finally, the team administers and supports several commercial Enterprise-wide software products that are used throughout the City.
 
This program area is responsible for the technology and infrastructure that powers the City website (www.cityofchicago.org), in addition to many other interactive websites and web tools.  
 
Additional Software Development Tasks and Initiatives include:

  • In addition to www.cityofchicago.org this team supports approximately 60 externally-accessible web applications and another 80 internal web applications and shared services.
  •  Manages and maintains over 300 layers of geographic data in the Enterprise Geographical Information System and builds maps and applications from the information.
  • Manages and maintains the City's GPS-based mobile assets and the systems that utilize this GPS data. 
  • Provides training and support for web content managers who publish information on the City Internet Site, Explore Chicago and Employee Intranet sites.
  • Designs, develops and supports enterprise-wide shared services, which include, among others, online payment processing and the automated internal routing of 311 Service Requests.
  • Provides web hosting environments for other City-developed web applications that comply with DoIT's web technology standards.
  • Administers and supports the City's Enterprise Filenet document management platform, which is used by several Departments for document storage, retrieval and workflow management.
  • Administers and supports the City's Enterprise Performance Management database platform, which is used by many City Departments to capture, track and management operational performance metrics.
  • Administers and supports the City's Enterprise Workgroup Collaboration platform, which is used by many City Departments to capture and share information used to execute and manage projects.
