File a Board of Ethics Complaint

The Board of Ethics has the authority to receive complaints and conduct investigations of alleged violations of the ethics ordinances by all City employees and officials.

Anyone with knowledge of a potential violation of the City’s Governmental Ethics or Campaign Financing Ordinances may file a complaint with the Board of Ethics. The Board reviews all complaints in accordance with Rule 4 of the Board’s Rules and Regulations

NOTE: As provided by the Board's Rules and Regulations all complaints and requests for investigations shall be:

  • in writing and include:
  • 1) the identity of the person against whom the complaint is filed;
  • 2) a clear description of the essential facts and circumstances constituting the alleged violation; and
  • 3) the identity of the person entering the complaint.
  • For complaints against aldermen, the written complaint must be signed and sworn.

There is no set format or pre-determined form for complaints.

While the Board has no authority to initiate investigations of anonymous complaints, it can, where appropriate, refer anonymous complaints to other agencies for further action, or, upon its own motion, itself initiate a request for an investigation (except in the case of aldermen) provided the conditions above are met.

If the Board determines that there has been a violation, it may recommend, or in some cases impose, sanctions, penalties, or corrective action.

All complaints to the Board, and its investigations and recommendations thereon, are confidential as provided by law.
