2009 City of Chicago Homeless Point-In-Time Count Executive Summary

The City of Chicago is required to conduct the Point-In-Time Homeless Count every two years in order to gather data on the homeless as a basis for federal funding. The count provides valuable information the City uses in planning for homeless services, and raises public awareness about homelessness in Chicago.

The Chicago Department of Family & Support Services (DFSS) is conducting the 2011 Point-In-Time count of homeless individuals living in shelters and on the street on Tuesday, January 25, 2011 from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. During the hours of the count, the City conducts a tally and survey of every homeless person in shelters and a canvass of the streets and public spaces for those unsheltered.

The last Point-In-Time Homeless Count, held in 2009, was supported by more than 500 volunteers who surveyed 5,356 people in shelters and 884 on the streets.
