Mayor Rahm Emanuel welcomed the former President of the State of Israel Shimon Peres to the City of Chicago today, as President Peres arrived to speak at the annual Jewish United Fund of Metropolitan Chicago Vanguard Dinner.

“I am delighted to welcome former President Peres to Chicago,” said Mayor Emanuel. “Shimon Peres is a demonstrated leader, and his visit exemplifies the possibilities for collaboration between the City of Chicago and the international community.”

Last year, President Peres and Mayor Emanuel participated together on a panel called “Leadership that Makes a Difference” at the 5th Israeli Presidential Conference. During his visit, Mayor Emanuel announced the University of Chicago – Ben-Gurion University collaboration on the Molecular Engineering of Water Resources, which focuses efforts to make drinking water cleaner, more accessible, and less expensive by 2020.

These two leaders have worked together since the 1990s, when Peres was the Prime Minister of Israel and Mayor Emanuel served in President Clinton’s White House. Their continuing relationship allows for further collaboration and dialogue between Israel and Chicago, in business, cultural and social realms.
