Mayor Rahm Emanuel joined Fire Commissioner Jose Santiago and officials from the Chicago Fire Department (CFD) today at the graduation ceremony of 64 new Firefighters and 52 new Paramedics. With this class, the first of 2015, there have been more than 700 graduates from the Fire Academy since Mayor Emanuel took office.

“Today we honor these brave men and women who put duty above danger, because nothing is more important than ensuring the safety and security of our residents,” said Mayor Emanuel. “These first responders represent the very highest values of service, and they will make a real difference in the lives of every Chicagoan. We wish them well as they promote safety and provide emergency care across our city.”

A tradition and commitment to public service runs deep in many of those who serve in the Fire Department, and today’s class is no different. Three of today’s graduates are family members of firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

First Deputy Fire Commissioner Charles Stewart III, Chicago Firefighter’s Union Local 2 President Tom Ryan, and other Chicago Fire Department officials joined Mayor Emanuel and Commissioner Santiago at Navy Pier for today’s event.

“It is an honor and a calling to serve as a firefighter or paramedic,” said Fire Commissioner Jose Santiago. “I welcome our newest members of the Chicago Fire Department and look forward to their dedicated service to the residents of Chicago.”

Candidates will now be assigned to firehouses throughout the City of Chicago, determined by the department’s needs. Firefighters will be assigned to fire trucks and engines, and Paramedics will be assigned to ambulances.
