Accessibility Compliance Unit - Law Student

The Accessibility Compliance Unit of the Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities is seeking two (2) second or third year law students to assist with appeals determinations made under the City of Chicago’s Americans with Disabilities Act Reasonable Accommodations program. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Must be a current college level junior, senior or graduate/law school student enrolled in an accredited four year college or university offering a baccalaureate or graduate degree program or an accredited law school, with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 grading scale or a 3.5 on a 5.0 grading scale.

NOTE: Selected student(s) must maintain the minimum cumulative grade point average throughout the duration of their employment.

Preference: Second or third year law students with a demonstrated interest in civil rights law, who have successfully completed at least one disability rights, civil rights or employment rights class, and have strong legal research and writing skills.

NOTE:  Cover Letter, Resume, Writing Sample, Current Transcript and current enrollment verification letter from school currently attending are required at the time of application.

RESIDENCY REQUIREMENT: City of Chicago residency is not required.

These are temporary positions.

SALARY:  Unpaid - May be used to satisfy academic credit requirements.

DUTIES: Conduct legal research, draft memoranda, assist in the conduct of witness interviews, review documents and other evidence and assist in drafting determination recommendations.  Students will work directly for MOPD’s Deputy Commissioner of Compliance, an attorney with extensive experience in the field of disability rights law.
