Yard Waste

Yard waste consists of leaves, grass clippings, branches, brush, clippings from shrubbery, and garden waste. Yard waste does not include dirt, rocks, or gravel.  Piles of tree branches that are approximately the size of two garbage carts or smaller are picked up by the yard waste collection crews. Piles that are larger should be entered into the 311 system as Tree Debris.  The program is "seasonal" from April until the end of November.

If you are in a Blue Cart service area then Yard Waste will now be collected every other week by our Yard Waste Crews, pick-up will be on the same week as your blue cart collection.

The City of Chicago recommends that residents without the Blue Cart program compost their yard waste in their own back yard.  Backyard composting turns yard and household waste into beneficial nutrients for the soil, and saves money on fertilizers.  For detailed information on composting, see "DOE's Composting Tips".  Visit www.chicagorecycles.org or Chicago Home Composting Program website at htt://urbanext.illinois.edu/homecomposting/.

For non-recycling wards yard waste is collected with the regular refuse.
