Digital Excellence Action Agenda
Modeled on the City’s highly successful Environmental Action Agenda, the Digital Excellence Action Agenda includes steps that all 46 departments and 6 sister agencies are taking to bridge the digital divide in Chicago.

Digital Excellence in Chicago: A Citywide View of Technology Use
In an effort to fully understand and determine the barriers to technology use for the underserved in Chicago, the City of Chicago and its partners, the MacArthur Foundation and the State of Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, commissioned the University of Illinois at Chicago and the University of Iowa to conduct a digital excellence study to identify areas in Chicago with low Internet use.

 

Enterprise Case Management
The Enterprise Case Management system is a centralized web-enabled application for Human Infrastructure departments and their delegate agencies to manage the numerous services provided to Chicago residents.

 

Federal and State Broadband Policy
Achieving digital excellence in Chicago depends in part on public policy frameworks created by the federal government. The City of Chicago is working with other cities to support a national policy that meets the needs of urban Americans.

 

GIS Data
The City of Chicago provides free GIS data for download in compressed shapefile (ESRI) format. Available data sets include administrative and political boundaries, special incentive programs, points of interest and transportation features. Also, data sharing agreements for non-governmental and governmental entities.

Mayor's Advisory Council on Closing the Digital Divide
In 2006, the City created a Mayor’s Advisory Council on Closing the Digital Divide with the goal of bringing public, private and non-profit sector leaders together to create a policy framework for bridging technology haves and have-nots. Over a period of twelve months, the Advisory Council established working groups to examine current conditions, activities and best practices for bridging the digital divide.

 

Smart Communities Program
The Smart Communities Program aspires to provide households, businesses and institutions in multiple communities with access to an affordable bundle of technology resources that will enable them to increase participation in meaningful digital activities.

Wireless Internet Zones
Chicago Wireless Internet Zones (WIZ) are locations throughout Chicago where free public wireless (wi-fi) networks are available. These networks are provided by the City of Chicago in order to promote and develop wireless technology and offer a flexible means of communication.
