City Council approves Federal Park expansion

The City Council today approved an ordinance authorizing the use of Open Space Impact Fees to complete environmental work for Federal Park, 2400 S. Dearborn St., in the Near South Side Community Area.

"Preserving green space in our communities helps beautify them, improve the quality of life," Mayor Daley said.  "It is important for us to continue to work with community leaders and other partners to find creative ways to preserve open space."

After the environmental work is completed, construction will being on improvements to the park site.  The park renovation will include an athletic field for baseball and soccer and the addition of a new playground for the community.

As part of the CitySpace Plan to provide additional green space to underserved Chicago neighborhoods, 4.2 acres of park land has been assembled for the new Federal Park.  The open space site is adjacent to the Harold Ickes Homes.

Approximately $100,000 is OSIF will be used for the environmental review and remediation at the new park site.  After construction has been completed, the park at 24th and Federal will be maintained by the Chicago Park District.
