Today Mayor Emanuel recognized the service and sacrifice that Chicago’s men and women of the armed forces have made for this city and this country. In honor of the 50th Anniversary of the Vietnam War, the Mayor announced that Chicago is the first city to become a commemorative partner with the U.S. Vietnam War Commemoration, an initiative directed by the U.S. Department of Defense.

“This Veterans Day marks two milestones, as it is the first since U.S. troops left Iraq last December and the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War. At a time when we need to bind our nation together and strengthen its foundations, the spirit and service of our veterans is essential to our country’s success,” said Mayor Emanuel. “On behalf of a grateful city and a grateful country, we honor their commitment and sacrifice.”

The mission of the U.S. Vietnam War Commemoration is to assist the people of this country in thanking and honoring its Vietnam War Veterans and their families, the fallen, the wounded, those who were held as Prisoners of War, those listed as missing and unaccounted for, the home front, Federal Agencies, all organizations that served or supported the Armed Forces, and our Vietnam War Allies. "Our men and women of the armed forces serve our country with honor and valor in times of peace and war. On this Veterans Day, we recognize their dedication and sacrifice and affirm our unwavering commitment to serving them as they return home," said Alderman James Balcer. "We salute them today and every day."
