Today Mayor Rahm Emanuel, Alderman Walter Burnett and the Chicago Housing Authority are welcoming a new Target store to the city of Chicago. Ald. Burnett, CHA CEO Charles Woodyard, and Target officials participated in a groundbreaking ceremony to welcome a new 190,000 square foot Target store at its new location on 1200 N. Larrabee. This store brings 200 new jobs to the neighborhood.

"In Chicago, we are committed to attracting companies who are willing to invest in our neighborhoods, create jobs for our residents, and improve quality of life in the city," said Mayor Emanuel. "There will be 200 new jobs at this Target, to add to the thousands of employees already working for Target in Chicago, advancing the fortunes and opportunity for the neighborhood."

Prior to the opening of the store, Target will host a job fair for CHA residents only prior to accepting applications from an open jobs fair. CHA and Target solidified a land-swap value deal agreement last year to ensure the new location.

"This Target store is an important and worthwhile development for the 27th ward," said Ald. Burnett. "It will employ hundreds of our residents, both in construction and when the store is complete and opened. I am particularly pleased that Target has committed to hire CHA residents to work in the store. This is a great example of a corporate partner working with the community to make our neighborhood stronger, and I am proud to have worked to bring this store to fruition."

This will be the thirteenth Target built in Chicago and the new store is expected to open in October 2013. There were two built in 2012 serving more Chicagoans. The company has made a positive impact in their communities, supporting educational and health programs.

“Chicago continues to be a strong market for Target and we’re excited to expand our presence there,” said Bryan Everett, Target senior vice president of stores in the Midwest Region.
