The Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events is pleased to present the summer season of Chicago City Markets presented by COUNTRY Financial®. Chicago City Markets sell fresh seasonal produce, flowers, prepared foods, unique Chicago-made products and rare finds – at Chicago’s longest running farmers market on Daley Plaza, the historic Maxwell Street Market and a dozen more community markets in neighborhoods across Chicago. A complete list of city-run markets, along with dates and times are listed below and at chicagocitymarkets.us.

“Chicago City Markets are farmers markets and much more,” said Mark Kelly, Commissioner of the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events. “Our markets provide residents with access to fresh and healthy food – and unique Chicago-made products and other merchandise – but they also bring communities together, many offering live music and other cultural activities.”

The official kick-off of the Chicago City Markets summer season will take place on Thursday, May 10, at 11:30am at the City Market at Daley Plaza. Among the activities, COUNTRY Financial® will announce the winner of the 11th Annual Reusable Bag Design Contest and will distribute free, reusable bags to market goers. This year’s winning design by a local student will be based on the theme You’ve Got a Lot Growing For You. The winning student will receive a scholarship prize and appear on thousands of reusable canvas bags distributed at Chicago City Market locations. The City Market at Daley Plaza will be open from 7am to 3pm and will also feature visiting vendors from the Maxwell Street Market.

“COUNTRY Financial is thrilled to be sponsoring our 11th annual bag design contest,” said Mike Fisher, Agency Vice President of Community Business Development at COUNTRY Financial. “It’s the best time of the year when our vendors and friends are back at the market with farm-fresh products, and we can fill up our newly designed reusable bag. It’s a special feeling.”

The Maxwell Street Market (800 S. Desplaines St.) is a year-round Chicago tradition of bargains and bargaining with an international flavor. The historic market, open year-round on Sundays, 7am–3pm, offers an eclectic mix of foods and finds—from tools to tires. It is also renowned for the best, authentic Mexican- and Latin-style street food in Chicago, with favorites that include: tamales, banana leaf wrapped tamals, tacos, quesadillas with fresh handmade corn tortillas, elotes and corn cakes. Beverage choices include soft drinks, horchatas and other fruit flavored drinks. For the sweet tooth, market goers can enjoy sorbet, funnel cakes, baked goods and Mangonadas served in a large cup with layers of mango sorbet, mango slices, drizzled with lime, chamoy and sprinkled chili powder. For additional information, visit maxwellstreetmarket.us and follow us on Facebook at Maxwell Street Market.

Chicago City Markets take place in neighborhoods across the city from Lincoln Park to Roseland, downtown to Austin. Many markets serve communities with limited access to fresh produce and areas designated low-income, low-access by the U.S Department of Agriculture (USDA). This year, most of the City of Chicago-managed market locations will accept LINK and will distribute double value coupons with every LINK purchase in a partnership with Experimental Station. Residents can find their neighborhood market at chicagocitymarkets.us.

In recognition of Chicago’s Year of Creative Youth, throughout 2018 various City Markets will host cooking demonstrations by student-chefs from Washburne Culinary & Hospitality Institute, locations and dates to be announced. Maxwell Street Market will also feature performances by youth groups at Maxwell Street Market on the second Sunday of each month. Additionally, all of the designs submitted for the 11th Annual Reusable Bag Design Contest will be on display from April 30 through May 11 in the lobby of the Daley Center (50 W. Washington St.). Mayor Emanuel has designated 2018 as the Year of Creative Youth as a citywide celebration of Chicago’s young artists and the mentors who inspire them.
