Daley Asks Chicagoans to Take Part in Gun Turn In Program

Mayor Richard M. Daley today urged Chicagoans to give up their guns in exchange for a prepaid MasterCard as part of the Chicago Alternative Policing Strategy (CAPS) Gun Turn-In event to be held Saturday, August 15, at 27 locations across the city.

“As we all know, removing firearms from the streets of Chicago is a daily battle for the men and women of the Chicago Police Department and the neighborhoods they serve,” Daley said in a news conference held at Destiny Worship Center, 5510 W. Chicago Av., one of the turn-in sites.

“One of our most successful initiatives to take illegal guns off our streets has been the Gun Turn-In. Since 2005, this program has removed more than 18,000 illegal guns from our streets -- more than any other city,” he said.

Daley said that every illegal gun taken off Chicago’s streets is potentially a life saved.

“Too often we hear about another child or adult in our city who finds a gun and uses it to settle a conflict, commit a crime or accidentally pulls the trigger. We need to remove the opportunities for these tragedies to occur, and the best way to do that is to get the guns off of our streets, which is why the Gun Turn-In is so important,” the Mayor said.

At this year’s Gun Turn-In, anyone who turns in an assault weapon, a gun or a BB gun at any of the 27 locations will receive a prepaid MasterCard in the amount of $100, $50 or $10, respectively.

“Today, I’m asking all residents of Chicago to turn in their firearms, no questions asked. Every parent, every institution and every person shares this responsibility,” Daley said.

The Mayor praised the many members of the local business community who have stepped up to help support the Gun Turn-In.

“Both last year and this year, we have had a strong showing of support from a diverse group of several hundred local businesses, ranging from Fortune 500 companies to small mom-and-pop stores located in neighborhoods around the city.

"Especially in these challenging economic times, their support demonstrates that they are serious about helping to rid our streets of violence. They are committed to making Chicago a better and safer city," Daley said.

The Mayor noted that the Gun Turn-In initiative has been transformed from just a police department and CAPS initiative to become a true collaboration among many partners. The faith-based community, business community, advocacy groups, community organizations, parents of victims, law enforcement, and some members of the media all provide support.

"I want ask all Chicagoans to re-commit themselves to join us in trying to end this epidemic that is taking young lives. For our part, I pledge to you that we will never give in to the gang bangers and drug dealers who perpetuate violence in our neighborhoods," Daley said.

"It will take all of us to address this crisis and the Gun Turn-In Saturday is a good place to start," he said.
