Proposal Would Set Height Limits on Buildings Around Midway Airport

Mayor's Press Office    312.744.3334

New construction proposed within the approach and departure paths for aircraft using Midway Airport would be subject to new height limitations under a proposed zoning amendment presented to City Council today.

The amendment would create a Midway International Airport Height Overlay District that extends 9,500 feet from the ends of each runway, beginning at a height of 30 feet and rising one foot for every 50 feet away from the airport, whichever is greater.

In instances where the overlay district conflicts with a height limitation specified by an underlying zoning district, the more restrictive provision would apply.

The purpose of the amendment, proposed by the Department of Housing and Economic Development at the request of the Department of Aviation, is to provide safe and unobstructed takeoff and landing paths to the airport.
