Statement from Mayor Rahm Emanuel Commemorating the 45th Anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr's Passing

Mayor's Press Office    312.744.3334

As we commemorate the 45th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s death, we reflect upon the legacy he left on Chicago. Our society was once defined by its divisions and Dr. King worked to create a society that was defined by the promise of overcoming them. We must continue Dr. King’s work by breaking down the barriers to equality, providing a high-quality education and opportunity for every child. “The arc of history is long, but it bends towards justice” Dr. King wrote. Through our work together for the next generation we must bend the arc of history, ensuring that Dr. King’s legacy endures in our City for generations to come.
