Statement from Mayor Emanuel on the Senate Judiciary Committee Approval of US Immigration Bill

Mayor's Press Office    312.744.3334

“I applaud the Senate Judiciary Committee for its vote to advance comprehensive immigration reform. The bipartisan effort by the gang of eight has made this critical step forward possible. The bill includes meaningful provisions that will help build our nation’s economic competiveness and create a pathway to citizenship for millions of undocumented individuals across the country, including those who live and work among us in Chicago. I urge the Senate to pass a bill that updates our broken immigration system for workers, employers, students, and families – and I hope these reforms reach all families, including same-sex couples.  All aspiring Americans and their families deserve the opportunity to prosper in this country, and a comprehensive bill is the only way to extend the promise of a better future to all immigrants."
