Water Main Replacement Work to Close Intersection of Western and Addison This Weekend

DWM Replacing Century-Old Water Mains; Part of 90 Miles of Water Main Replacements in 2015

The Chicago Department of Water Management (DWM) will temporarily close the intersection of Western Avenue and Addison Street this weekend in order to complete the connection of a new water main recently installed on Western Avenue.

The intersection will be closed between 7 p.m. on Friday, April 10 and 7 p.m. on Sunday, April 12.

This construction work is part of a larger DWM project to replace water mains installed more than 100 years ago along Western from Jones Street to Addison. DWM has already replaced more than six blocks of water mains in the multi-phased project, which began in November 2014. The streets will also be resurfaced at the completion of the project.

The work and intersection closure has been coordinated with Lane Tech High School's Spring Break and the Chicago Cubs schedule.

The detours will be posted as follows:

• Northbound Western traffic to detour at Diversey Avenue, east to Ashland Avenue, north to Irving Park Road, west back to Western. The detour will be reversed for southbound traffic on Western.

• Eastbound traffic on Addison will detour at California Avenue, north to Irving Park, east to Ashland, and south back to Addison. The detour will be reversed for westbound traffic on Addison.

Motorists are asked to drive cautiously through the construction zone, and are encouraged to either add a few minutes to their travel schedule or take alternative routes to avoid traffic delays.

Under Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s Building a New Chicago infrastructure investment program, DWM plans to replace more than 90 miles of water mains and 22 miles of sewer mains in neighborhoods all across Chicago in 2015.
