"The Chicago Commission on Human Relations mourns the recent loss of Rabbi Herman Schaalman. The long time faith leader of the Emanuel Congregation in Edgewater, Rabbi Schaalman was a leader in promoting interfaith dialogue and a champion of civil rights for all. From 1990-2011, he served as member of the Chicago Commission on Human Relations, Board of Commissioners, in which he fought to protect the rights of all Chicagoans by bringing justice to cases of employment, housing, public accommodations, and credit discrimination. His thoughtful reflection on the issues of discrimination and hate helped shape the work of the CCHR, and will be memorialized in our city's commitment to inclusion and equality for all residents. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and to the entire Emanuel Congregation."
