Downtown Street Resurfacing Runs Through September

September 12, 2016

The Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) announced that resurfacing of downtown arterial streets is underway. Work on Randolph began this week and starting Monday, September 12, Dearborn St. resurfacing begins. Randolph will be resurfaced from Michigan Avenue to Wacker Dr.   Dearborn will be resurfaced between Madison and Wacker Drive.  Finally, a one block stretch of Clinton St. between Randolph and Lake will be resurfaced.  The work on these three arterial downtown streets follows extensive construction and utility upgrades in the Loop.

In addition to resurfacing, CDOT will build a new protected westbound bicycle lane on Randolph to complement the eastbound bicycle lane on Washington Street.  The bicycle lanes on Dearborn and Clinton will be improved with a new riding surface and fresh markings.

On Dearborn Street, the two-way bike lane will remain open throughout most of the construction, but CDOT recommends that people ride slowly through the construction zone and use alternate routes as necessary.  During the week of 9/19, the two-way bike lane will be resurfaced with all work during overnight hours.  When active construction in the bike lane is occurring, the bike lane will be closed and people riding north on Dearborn will be directed to ride in the northbound travel lanes.  Proper signage alerting motorists to share the lane will be posted.  People riding southbound will be detoured to Clark St, with proper detour signage posted.  The closure of the bike lane will only occur overnight with the bike lane reopening during the day.

The Clinton Street work will also cause changes in the traffic patterns for bicycle riders. A two-way bike lane on Clinton Street will be provided throughout construction, but CDOT recommends that people ride slowly through the construction zone as pavement may be rough and a temporary bike lane will be necessary at times.  While the two-way bike lane is under construction a temporary two-way bike lane will be provided and marked with signs and cones.
