Mayor with Street Pavers

Mayor Rahm Emanuel today joined Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) Commissioner Rebekah Scheinfeld to announce that the City of Chicago has reached the 100 mile mark of arterial and residential streets paved during the 2017 season. “We have reached an important milestone in our summer paving season. But it is not just about paving miles, it’s about improving our streets to enhance the quality of life for our residents,” said Mayor Emanuel. "These are the improvements that matter to residents and the investments we'll continue to make in our neighborhoods."

Through CDOT's Project Coordination Office and its mapping technology, the City has been able to work together with about 30 utility partners, including Com Ed and People’s Gas, to schedule infrastructure improvements that minimize the times when streets are closed or obstructed. This partnership has achieved reduced costs for pavement restoration and shared/reduced cost for project mobilization, collectively savings more than $101 million since 2012.

“The Department is working to ensure the City is not only increasing investment in street repaving projects, but also investing more efficiently through improved coordination. Together with our partners, these efforts are minimizing a projects impact on residents and helping provide the highest quality service possible,” Commissioner Sheinfield said.

In addition to residential streets and alleys, CDOT has paved nine miles of arterial streets through its Arterial Street Resurfacing Program. An additional 41 miles of arterial streets have been identified for paving during the 2017 and beginning of 2018 paving season. Among the 41 miles of arterial streets included in the current resurfacing plan are:

  • S. Racine Ave. from 63rd St. to 74th St. (1.4 miles)
  • 83rd St. between Vincennes and Houston (2.6 miles)
  • Damen between 83rd St. and 87th Street (1 mile)
  • Stony Island between S. Doty Ave. and E. 122nd St. (2.4 miles)
  • S. LaSalle St. between Wentworth Ave. and Pershing Rd. (1.5 miles)
  • E. 47th St. between State St. and Cottage Grove Ave. (1 mile)
  • S. Loomis Blvd. between W. 59th St. and W. 74th St. (1.9 miles)
  • W. Lake St. between Ashland Ave. And N. Wacker Dr. (1.5 miles)
  • S. Clark St. from Congress Pkwy. and W. Cermak Rd. (1.5 miles)
  • W. Peterson between Cicero Ave. and Lincoln Ave. (2.1 miles)
  • N. Cicero between W. Irving Park Rd. and Grand Ave. (2.75 miles)
  • W. Touhy Ave. between Western Ave. and N. Sheridan Rd. (1.4 miles)

Street paving is led by CDOT in coordination with the Department of Water Management (DWM), and various utility partners. Each season, paving begins in April and last through November, weather permitting.

Since 2011, CDOT, DWM and other partners including private utilities have paved more than 1,700 miles of City streets.  By the end of 2018, Chicago is on pace to have repaved approximately 2,000 miles of streets, almost half of the City’s total.
