The City of Chicago's Green Roof dataset and corresponding map provides the location, satellite images, and square footage of existing green roofs within the City of Chicago.

The methodology involved the acquisition of high resolution multispectral imagery dataset from September 2013, modification of the City’s existing building footprint data, powerful image processing, feature extraction within Idrisi Selva, and manual review of Idrisi output and available imagery.

The result produced three City-wide geospatial datasets providing a snapshot of green roofs within the City limits. The results of the analysis include overall count of vegetated roofs and their total square footage. The study identified:

• 509 vegetated roofs within the City of Chicago
• 5,564,412 square feet of green roof coverage
