The Nature Areas Directory identifies and provides information on approximately 3,800 acres of existing of natural habitats and 920 acres of potential habitat restoration sites within city limits. The 99 open space locations in the directory were inventoried by the Department of Housing and Economic Development staff using mapping tools, aerial imagery, on-site visits and previous inventory studies. The project was part of the research for the Chicago Wildlife and Nature Plan.
