Roosevelt/Canal TIF

Designation: 1997    Terminated: 2015

The Near West Side's Roosevelt/Canal TIF district was created to foster the development of a grocery store and related retail structures on the southwest corner of Roosevelt and Canal streets, which was previously occupied by underutilized rail lines and a Soo Line railroad terminal. The TIF was later expanded to 42 acres to foster the redevelopment of vacant parcels of land for parking and other uses. Funds from the TIF are intended to help pay for site assembly, demolition and preparation costs and to provide relocation assistance. Overall goals of the TIF are to provide a mechanism to create jobs, to improve underutilized land with structures that serve area residents and businesses, and to create amenities that foster additional public and private improvements.
