Mayor Rahm Emanuel, Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy and the Chicago Police Department today honored fallen officer Paul W. Nauden, star #10803, who died in the line of duty on May 20, 2011 at the age of 46.

“Officer Nauden didn’t just protect and serve his City, he protected, served, and helped to carry all of those who served with him,” said Mayor Emanuel. “As we honor Officer Nauden’s final sacrifice for the City with this star, we also remember the sacrifices that each officer makes every single day to protect our neighborhoods.”

Officer Nauden was involved in a narcotics investigation on May 19, 2011 when he reported that he was not feeling well and was taken to a hospital. He died from a heart attack the following morning.

“Officer Paul Nauden was a dedicated public servant whose commitment, courage and professionalism served as an example to his fellow officers,” said Superintendent McCarthy. “We are grateful as a Department and as a City for Officer Nauden’s commitment to preserving the safety and well-being of the communities in which he served.”

Officer Nauden was a 21-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department with a distinguished record of service.  He began his career in the Grand Crossing (3rd) District, where he served for nearly 10 years. In November 2000, Officer Nauden was assigned to the Narcotics Unit where he served until his death.

Throughout his exemplary career, Officer Nauden earned 49 awards. Among these notable achievements were 27 honorable mentions, eight department commendations, and one special commendation. Officer Nauden also was recognized for joint operations, problem solving, and crime reduction efforts. He is survived by his wife and two children.

Officer Nauden’s star will be the 482nd star placed in the Honored Star Case located in the lobby of the Chicago Public Safety Headquarters building (formerly Chicago Police Headquarters).  The Honored Star Case contains the stars of every Chicago Police officer who has died in the line of duty.
