Mayor Rahm Emanuel today announced Shop & Save, a trusted name in grocery stores throughout the Chicago area, has signed a purchase agreement to build a new grocery store in Jeffery Plaza at 2101 E. 71st St. The move marks a major step towards new fresh food and grocery option for the South Shore community. The area has been missing a grocery store since Dominick’s closed locations across the city in 2014.

“This agreement is not just the next step towards a new grocery store serving South Shore, it is a major vote of confidence in a great Chicago neighborhood,” Mayor Emanuel said. “In communities across Chicago we are replacing food deserts with quality options that strengthen neighborhoods, create new jobs and improve the health and wellness of Chicagoans.”

When built, the new store will be the result of many years of effort by the Mayor, the local community and Alderman Leslie Hairston (5th). Mayor Emanuel convened a Grocery Task Force led by the Deputy Mayor in 2013, recognizing the critical need for a full-service grocer in South Shore that would replace the former Dominick’s as a community anchor. The new store is possible thanks to numerous community partners that have advocated for it since 2014.

“This store represents years of work and partnership between the community and the city,” Ald. Leslie Hairston (5th) said. “I look forward to cutting the ribbon and officially welcoming Shop & Save to their new home in South Shore.”

The store new will offer a huge daily selection of freshly-baked breads and pastries, quality meat, poultry and seafood, fresh ‘from the farm’ dairy products, and delicious and healthy fruits and vegetables.

Construction will begin immediately following completion of the sale later this year. City assistance is expected but not finalized.
