City of Chicago Announces Annual Holiday Tree Recycling Program

December 30, 2016

Environmentally Friendly Disposal Service Provides Free Mulch for Residents

CHICAGO -- The Chicago Department of Streets and Sanitation (DSS), in partnership with the Chicago Park District, today announced that the City's annual holiday tree recycling program will run from Tuesday, January 3 through Saturday, January 21, 2017, at 24 locations citywide.

"Dropping off holiday trees for recycling is a worthy act by residents as each recycled tree benefits our environment.  Each year this program helps divert waste from landfills and provides residents with reusable mulch," said Commissioner Charles L. Williams, Chicago Department of Streets and Sanitation.

Last year, the program mulched over 19,000 trees.

Live holiday trees can be dropped off inside tree corrals set up at any one of the 24 designated Chicago Park District locations.  Ornaments, lights and tinsels must be removed before the tree is dropped off.  The holiday tree recycling program is not able to accept wreaths or garlands.  Trees should be removed from any bags when placed in the tree recycling corrals.

Free mulch will be available for residents to pick-up beginning on January 3, at six designated locations.

"We encourage people to bring their holiday trees to designated park sites throughout the city and in return receive free mulch when available at select locations," said Michael P. Kelly, General Superintendent and CEO of the Chicago Park District.  "We value this environmentally beneficial partnership that encourages the public to become stewards of the environment."
