Made in Chicago

The City of Chicago Department of Planning and Development (DPD) promotes a vibrant economy by encouraging job creation and development of new businesses. The department focuses on business attraction, retention, and expansion of businesses in all sectors, utilizing Local Industrial Retention Initiatives (LIRI) Councils, department staff and often by partnering with community organizations such as World Business Chicago.  One of the department’s most popular programs is Made in Chicago.


Made in Chicago promotes and supports the manufacturing sector and individual manufacturers throughout the City of Chicago,one of the world’s premier manufacturing centers. The program objective is to showcase and promote Chicago manufacturers and their products.  The program is open to all companies that manufacture products in the City of Chicago.

With an established and diverse manufacturing sector, strong distribution networks, a skilled workforce, and a wide variety of public and private support, the manufacturing sector is thriving in Chicago.  The sector is a central part of the City’s economy, supplying 80,000 jobs at 2,600 firms. 

By including the City’s entire industrial sector, which includes manufacturing, as well as wholesale trade, transportation, and logistics and warehousing, the sector supplies 2 00,000 jobs in 6,800 companies.

From small family-owned manufacturers to global institutions to entrepreneurs who have chosen Chicago as the place to start their businesses, Chicago is home to a diverse array of manufacturing companies. 

The Made in Chicago program gives companies the opportunity to:   

  • Have a permanent product display at Chicago’s airports and City Hall
  • Display products at McCormick Place trade show space
  • Take advantage of marketing opportunities to vendors and retailers at O’Hare and Midway International Airports
  • Gain exposure by inclusion in the Made in Chicago link on the city’s website providing as well coverage on the City’s cable access channel
