CHICAGO — New air service between O’Hare International Airport and La Aurora International Airport in Guatemala City aboard Avianca Airlines will begin on Wednesday, Dec. 13, the Chicago Department of Aviation (CDA) and Avianca announced today.

“On behalf of Mayor Brandon Johnson, I am honored to welcome Avianca back to the world’s second-busiest airport,” said CDA Commissioner Jamie L. Rhee. “As the best-connected airport on the globe, O’Hare provides tremendous new connection opportunities between Guatemala City and hundreds of destinations across North America, Europe and Asia, and provides a convenient new option for travel for the hundreds of thousands of Chicagoland residents with ties to Central America.”

“Chicago is an important destination in our network, is not just home of one of the largest Guatemalan communities in the United States but also a top tourist destination for Latin American travelers, with its enchanting and iconic architecture, renowned museums and rich cultural offer, Chicago has it all”, said Rolando Damas, Avianca’s Sale Director for North America, Central America and the Caribbean.

This announcement marks a return to Chicago for Avianca, which last provided the Guatamela City service in May 2019. Chicago’s Guatemalan-origin population is the third-largest Hispanic population in Chicago, and it’s the largest population of individuals with a Central American origin.

The new Chicago to Guatemala City service will operate three times per week aboard an A320 aircraft, with departing flights from Chicago available on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays. Arriving flights will land at O’Hare International Airport at 1:15 p.m., and departing flights will leave for Guatemala City at 2:35 p.m.

Additional seasonal service from O’Hare to Guatemala City is available once per week on United Airlines and American Airlines. Avianca is a member of the Star Alliance, the world’s largest global airline alliance, and the largest alliance operating at O’Hare, with 15 current carriers, led by hub carrier United Airlines.
