City of Chicago Hosts the 2023 National Homeland Security Association Conference

The 18th annual National Homeland Security Conference (NHSC) will be hosted by the City of Chicago and the National Homeland Security Association board for the first time ever in Chicago. The (NHSC) annually brings together professionals in Homeland Security, Law Enforcement, Fire Rescue, EMS, and Emergency Management. They include officials in all levels of government agencies, nonprofit agencies, business owners, universities, and decision makers to learn about emerging trends in homeland security, public safety, and emergency management as well as the ability to showcase and see the new equipment and technology available to support their mission.

Opening Ceremony

MEDIA INSTRUCTIONS: Media is required to check-in at the registration/Media Check-in Desk upon arrival to receive credentials for the opening ceremony. Media must be in place no later than 8:45 a.m. Registration is located at the Grand Ballroom Registration desk.
Wednesday, July 2

Apparatus Display on Wacker Drive between Stetson and Columbus
The display will showcase federal, state, county, and local first responders’ apparatus and equipment display. Note: E. Wacker Drive will be closed between Stetson and Columbus from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Chicago Fire Department and Chicago Police Department Exercise/Demonstration
1:15 p.m. on the Chicago River
The Chicago Fire Department and Chicago Police Department will perform an asset demonstration of a live water rescue incident in addition to an active threat response incident on the Chicago River in front of the Hyatt Regency Hotel just west of the Columbus Drive Bridge. The Chicago Fire Department Air Sea Rescue helicopters, marine units, and Chicago Police Department SWAT and special functions teams will be taking part. Note: simulated gun fire and explosions are part of this demonstration.
MEDIA INSTRUCTIONS: There will be a media area set on Upper Wacker overlooking the Chicago River and Riverwalk just south of the Columbus Drive Bridge.

About OEMC
Chicago’s Office of Emergency Management and Communications (OEMC) oversees several functions that support public safety and provides assistance to residents 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The OEMC manages the following operational areas for the city: 9-1-1 call taking and dispatch; the 3-1-1 call center; emergency management; and traffic management. The OEMC coordinates with departments citywide, including the Chicago Police Department and Chicago Fire Department, in addition to various other local, state, and federal agencies as it relates to public safety planning and coordination for everything from large-scale special events to public safety emergencies and disasters.
