Near West Side Housing Analysis

The Department of Planning and Development (DPD) is performing an analysis of housing trends and opportunities in the Near West Side and East Garfield Park neighborhoods in conjunction with the Department of Housing, Ald. Walter Burnett (27th) and Ald. Jason Ervin (28th).
Over the past two years, both neighborhoods have attracted growing interest in development opportunities for both affordable and market rate housing. As a result, neighborhood leaders and the local aldermen are seeking clarification and guidance about how to respond to such requests in a way that reflects the community's collective vision.
Working with the Department of Housing, DPD has begun to gather and distill data about the area's housing trends to inform and empower the community as they make future development decisions. The goals of this research and related community engagement efforts include: |

- Develop recommendations for using City-owned land for housing that addresses affordability, density and design
- Create guidance documents for the community and the City to use in reviewing housing projects that require City-owned land and zoning changes
These documents, produced by DPD, could include a set of goals for City-owned lots, concept plans for targeted clusters of City-owned land, and design guidelines.
Community Engagement Activities
The initiative will be conducted in three phases, as outlined below. No specific timeline has been set to allow for maximum responsiveness to community requests. However, information about meetings and materials will be added as it becomes available.
